free will vs. determinism
am i uncapatalizing the starting word in each sentence by my own will? or is it fate that these sentences look like they were typed by a preschooler without motor skills?
i started thinking of this topic when i read they both die at the end, a book set in a society where on the day of your death, you are told that sometime in the next 24 hours you will die. i dont remember the exact details but i remember thinking a lot about avoiding your fate through your actions. for example if you know you are going to die today, will you avoid driving in case you get in a car accident? and if you do decide to walk, is that not free will, a deliberate action you make? but in avoiding the car, does that lead you to get hit by a car when crossing the street? was that fate?
i was talking to mr. pape about this the other day too, whether or not we actually chose our multiple choice answers or if i was destined to put C on question 17 from the day I was born. he went all mathematical on me, saying that everything in life is the result of many, many chemical processes that bring us to where we are today, and will continue bringing us places until we reach our grave. i thought that kinda made sense, but my question was if we actually have the ability deliberately chose our actions that end up leading to those chemical reactions.
i forgot what he said but it's super interesting and also frustrating to think about.
